What is the double asteroid redirection test (Dart)?
NASA will launch its first planetary defense test mission named the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). The DART spacecraft will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission is to test the new technology to be prepared in case an asteroid heads towards Earth in the future.

What would happen if the DART spacecraft hit an asteroid?
This means that instead of an impact crater 160 meters wide, the impact of the DART spacecraft could deform the asteroid completely and leave it almost unrecognizable.

What is the difference between the dawn and DART missions?
Each satellite will take information based on the signals from four GPS satellites. The DART is a planetary defense-driven test of technologies for preventing an impact of Earth by a hazardous asteroid. The Dawn was a mission to the two most massive bodies in the main asteroid belt – Vesta and Ceres.
What is the weight of the DART spacecraft?
DART is a low-cost spacecraft, weighing around 610 kg at launch and 550 kg during impact. It also carries about 10 kg of xenon which will be used to demonstrate the agency’s new thrusters called NASA Evolutionary Xenon Thruster–Commercial (NEXT-C) in space.

When will the Dart launch date be determined?
At the request of Science Mission Directorate (SMD) senior leadership, a risk assessment was performed on the DART project schedule to determine the viability of the primary (July 21, 2021 to August 24, 2021) and secondary (November 24, 2021 to February 15, 2022) launch periods.

Is now the perfect time for the DART mission to occur?
It’s the perfect time for the DART mission to occur. Didymos and Dimorphos will be relatively close to Earth — within 6,835,083 miles (11 million kilometers) — in September 2022.

What is DART’s target?
DART’s target is a binary asteroid system consisting of Didymos (Greek for “twin”), about a half-mile across, and its smaller companion called Dimorphos (Greek for “two forms”), about 530 feet across. DART will use an autonomous targeting system to aim itself at Dimorphos.

What does Dart stand for?
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), NASA’s first flight demonstration for planetary defense, seeks to test and validate a method to protect Earth in case of an asteroid impact threat.

What is NASA’s double asteroid redirection test (Dart)?
On Nov. 24, 2021, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft will lift off on a ten-month journey to crash into a distant asteroid – on purpose. As a test of NASA’s planetary defense technologies, DART will collide with and slightly change the speed of Dimorphos, a small ‘moonlet’ orbiting the asteroid Didymos.
