What is the ingenuity helicopter?
Ingenuity is the first helicopter to fly on Mars. It was carried by NASA’s rover called Perseverance that was launched in July 2020. Ingenuity is able to fly using counter-rotating blades that spin at about 2,400 rpm (Rotations Per Minute). It has a wireless communication system, and is equipped with computers, navigation sensors, and two cameras.
How much did it cost NASA to build the ingenuity helicopter?
The helicopter underwent extensive flight-dynamics and environment testing, and was mounted on the underside of the Perseverance rover in August 2019. NASA spent about $80 million to build Ingenuity and about $5 million to operate the helicopter.

What does ingenuity fly over?
Ingenuity first flies over a group of sand ripples then, about halfway through the video, several rock fields. Finally, relatively flat and featureless terrain appears below, making a good landing spot. The video of the 161.3-second flight was sped up approximately five times.
How did NASA’s ingenuity helicopter get to Mars?
It hitched a ride to Mars on the Perseverance rover. Once the rover reached a suitable "airfield" location, it released Ingenuity to the surface so it could perform a series of test flights over a 30-Martian-day experimental window. The helicopter completed its technology demonstration after three successful flights.
