Austin (USA) Elon Musk presented the humanoid robot Tesla Optimus to the public for the first time in April 2022. At the time, the Tesla CEO stated that the robot could become a more important invention than the company’s electric cars.
On the occasion of its official presentation at the second Tesla AI Day so far, a robot staggered across the stage with a few steps. He waved awkwardly at the audience and performed a handful of asynchronous dance moves.
It was obvious to the audience that the Optimus moved far more awkwardly than the robots from Boston Dynamics, for example. Musk still sees his proposal far ahead. In his opinion, the greatest advantage of the Tesla Optimus is its ability to recognize its surroundings.
The humanoid robot can use the technology of the driver assistance system Autopilot, which Tesla uses in its electric cars.
The visual appearance corresponded to that of a prototype status. Optimus showed itself partly unfinished with visible cables and without much design polish. In any case, that excited Elon Musk, who hastened to verbosely embellish the weak points.
The robot’s potential uses were only demonstrated via video during the presentation, in which the 73-kilogram robot watered flowers with a watering can, moved a heavy cardboard box and transported metal components in a Tesla car factory. According to Musk, the robot will soon improve people’s lives significantly.
Tesla wants to finish the development of the useful robot as soon as possible and produce it in the millions. The cost of the robot should be around $20.000 USD.
In the future, such a high availability of robotic aids could “ensure a future in abundance, a future without poverty,” Musk enthused.
